I don't know my history but it seems Phillipenes declared independence from Spain and Spain then sold it to the US and the US ended up getting ripped off? Last i checked I don't think they're a US territory.

We crushed the revolutionaries when we took it (not one of the US's shining moments). I believe we promised to let them be sovereign, eventually, and after winning WWII we gave them independence.
